Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is very effective to estimate the weatherability of iron oxide pigments which are contained in PVC composite-coated steel plates (PVC plate). Estimations were performed on 14 iron oxide pigments-eight commercial products and six trial samples-by the ESR method. These results were, then, compared to those of outdoor exposure tests and accelerated exposure tests by sunshine weather-meter on PVC plates containing the same pigments. These results were entirely consistent. The iron oxide pigments having large inherent spectrum strength value showed poorer weatherability than those with a small value. PVC plates containing pigments with values of 1 or less was found to have good weatherability equivalent to outdoor exposure for five years.
