Abstract

In recent years, the energy consumption of office buildings has been increasing. In particular, HVAC systems account for a high proportion of the total energy consumption. One factor that increases the energy consumption is the control problem. Therefore, this study aimed to show the effectiveness of model predictive control (MPC) as a new control method to replace classical control. In this paper, we outlined MPC and presented case studies on various control methods using MPC for a VAV system based on an air conditioning system simulation tool of the coupled simulation of CFD analysis integrating a general-purpose control simulator. It was found that MPC improves control performance because the overshoots at the rising time of air conditioning was suppressed compared to PID control. As a result, the effectiveness of MPC in air conditioning were control was shown by maintaining the working space at a set temperature using the HVAC system performance simulator with MPC.
