Abstract

Direct ozone supply to the activated sludge tank was examined to improve the treatment performance of the activated sludge method. To verify the relationship between the amount of ozone supply and the treatment performance improvement effect of the activated sludge, a batch test for supplying ozone to the activated sludge was carried out. To demonstrate the improvement effect when applied to industrial wastewater, ozone was directly supplied to the activated sludge tanks of a food factory and a pulp factory. It was found of that supplying ozone directly to the activated sludge tank increased the amount of processable water improved the sludge sedimentation properties, and reduced the amount of excess sludge generated. These results strongly suggest that directly supplying ozone to activated sludge is an effective solution to solving several problems in sludge sedimentation including sludge excess amount of sludge formation in the activated sludge method.
