Abstract
The purpose of this study is to simulate the effect of reductions in greenhouse gas emissions by upgrading insulation levels of existing houses. If 50% of existing houses that were built over 30 years ago (in 2005) are renovated to comply with the latest energy-saving standards (established in 1999) by 2010, and 50% of the residual fluorocarbons are recovered and disposed of during demolition, in addition to the measures for new houses (i.e. improving insulation standards and replacing foaming agents with non-fluorocarbon types), GHG emissions during the period 2008-2012 can be reduced by 2.0% over 1990. Moreover, if 50% of existing houses which were built over 20 years ago (in 2005) are widely targeted, GHG emissions during the period 2008-2012 can be reduced by 2.9% over 1990.
