(1) To begin with, I studied contact angles at the mineral surfaces through water drop method. At my preliminary test I cleaned the mineral surfaces with cloth dipped in ether. This cloth I had previously boiled in pure water for one hour and I made use of pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena, zinc blend and quartz in test. But the yalue of the contact angles at the surfaces of these minerals proved to be very inconstant. I had great many difficulties to obtain constant value at the surface of the same mineral. In order to obtain cleaned and well-polished surfaces, experiments were repeated on quartz. I used Benzene, Benzine, alkali for the purpose of taking off fatty materials over the mineral surfaces. Thus by laborious efforts moderately constant value (10°-20°) was obtained.
(2) The effect of sodium oleate on contact angle at the surface of quartz was tested through air bubble method in the solution. But in this case there was no effect worth mentioning. This may perhaps be attributed to the fact that the surface tension of water is lowered by the reagent. The value of contact angle which was obtained through air bubble method in pure water was markedly smaller than that through the dropping of pure water.
(3) Effects of Amyle Xanthate on the contact angle at the surface of pyrite, galena and chalcopyrite were tested. My experiments were done upon both polished surface and cleavage. And I found there was a great effect. By using this reagent (only 0.0005%) remarkable effects were obtained. And also I found that its effect on the new surface was greater than on the old one. So I believe that the effectiveness of most collectors will be measured by their effects on the contact angles at the surface of minerals.
