For the analysis of the air conditions of an underground airways, it is necessary to evaluate the thermal constants of the surrounding rock-the heat conductivity, the thermal conductivity of rock, and the thermal-transfer coefficient on the rock surface-within acceptable engineering accuracy.
In this study, a method for the evaluation of the thermal conductivity of rock mass has been developedby measuring the rock temperatures at the two different depths in situ.
The measurements of the rock temperatures were carried out in the two underground airways located in the high temperature rock, and it is found that the accuracy of the measurements to evaluate the air condition of the underground airway is sufficient enough in the engineering sense, if the rock temperatures and the thermal conductivitiesare measured by the procedures described as follows.
1) The optimum time for the measurements of the rock temperatures is about two months later after the excavation of the airway.
2) The optimum depths for the measurements of the rock temperatures are 1m and 2m deep from the rocksurface.
3) The rock temperatures should be measured, at least, once a week, and the average of the calculated thermal conductivities derived from the measurements of the rock temperatures should be used as the thermal conductivity of the rock for the analysis of the underground air condition.
