This study has investigated the microstructures of copper anodes of quarternary systems, i.e.Cu-O-S-Vb element (As, Sb or Bi), at several different levels of oxygen, sulphur and an impurity element and their deductive effects on the passivation behavior during electrorefining process. The results obtained have shown that, when the Cu-O eutectis were deduced by the addition of a Vb element and subsquent compound formation at grain boundaries, one of the causes of passivation phenomena has been eliminated, by decreasing eutectic area from anode surface. This result gives an indication that the passivation may be deduced, thus making a higher current density operation possible, by properly controlling the impure element content levels matched by oxygen and sulphur contents.
