In this method, coal seam is devided nito several benches of moderate thickness and worked from the upper bench in longwall system. When the upper bench is workod, the flour of the face covered with wooden plate, and these wood plate become the roof of the face of next bench. Interval of each longwall faces is about 25 meters. and steel frops and steel bars are used as timbering of these baces.
The chief advantages of this method are as follows, increase of efficency at the face, prevention of spontaneous combusion, decrease of the cost, etc.
Now, at Hojyo Colliery, coal seam is successfully worked in three benches and this method is adopted at six collieries in Japan.
