We made an experimentation about the separation of FeCl3 from TiCl4 with a cottrell precipitator during the direct chlorination of ilmenite.
The most part of FeC13 was caught with a cottrell precipitator and Fe included in the condensed TiCl4 was about 0.002%, compand with Fe in TiCl4 being 0.06% with out a cottrell by our experimental apparatus.
Also, we studied the solubility of FeCl3 in TiCl4. At 110°C the solubility of FeCl3 is 0.043% and at 40°C it is 0.003%, (weight percent) Vanadium could not be separated with a cottrell because a difference of the boiling points of VOCl3 and TiCl4 is small.
With the method of a selective oxidation of VOCl3 in TiCl4 by oxygen, V could be removed to a certain extent, but the result was unsatisfactory as compared with the results of the methods that remove V by Cu powder or H2S.
