Chlorinations of, high titanium leaching residue prepared by the reduction and leaching method, titanium slag and titanium oxide (anatase and rutile) with CO-Cl2 gas mixture were studied.
Following results were obtained.
1) Starting temperatures of chlorination for leaching residue, titanium slag, anatase and rutile were 250°C, 300°C, 240°C, and 320°C, respectively.
2) Chlorination rates of leaching residue, titanium slag and titanium oxide took the maximum value at 650°C, 550°C and 400°C.
It seemed that the chlorination rate took the maximum value at relatively low temperature was due to the dissociation of CO.
3) X-ray analyses showed that leaching residue contained both anatase and rutile, but after chlorination only rutile remained.
4) When N2 was added to the reaction gas, the chlorination of Ti was hindered and Fe was chlorinated preferentially.
