In the Hitachi Mine, research works had been conducted on the process of refining of anode copper obtainable from the converters by blowing in pulverized coal to replace the refining method adopted in the past of using green poles. This process was introduced in actual operation since 1962 and they have succeeded in its industrialization.
By this new refining process, it will be possible to achieve an integrated processes of oxidation, reduction and heating into one by blowing in the pulverized coal and air into molten copper varying their respective ratio. In this way, the mine has succeeded in reducing both the operating time and the production cost approximately one third and two thirds respectively.
Moreover, this process has also been introduced into the process of refining for producing wirbars using pulverized charcoal and they have thereby succeeded in not only obtaining superior quality wirebars but also achieving a wide scale rationalization in operation by its industrialization.
