Equilibrium in the reaction
CO2= [O] Cu+x+CO
was investigated at 1150°C. From experimental results, it was found that the activities of oxygen in liquid copper were increased by addition of both gold and silver, and decreased by tin and nickel.
εOAu=∂lnψOAu /∂NAu=27Au<0.00930
εOAg=∂lnψOAg /∂NAg=2.6 NAg<0.0305
εoSn=∂lnψOSn /∂N Sn=-18 NSn<0.0416
εONi=∂lnψONi/∂NNi=-3.5 NNi<0.0956
The experimental values of the activity coefficients of oxygen were compared with those predicted from solution models. The quasi-chemical model of Alcock and Richardson with Z=2 and the regular model of Belton and Tankins gave good agreement with the experimental results in Cu-Ag-O system (NAg<0.0305). In Cu-Sn-O system (Nsn<0.0416), Alcock and Richardson's quasi-chemical model with Z=1 gave fair agreememt within the experimental errors.
