Abstract

The sound propagation characteristics in an amorphous ribbon magnetostrictive delay line coated with a viscous liquid are described. The change of the phase difference between the output and the input electrical signal, corresponding to the delay time, and the insertion loss of the delay device are given as functions of viscosity and thickness. The phase difference deviation increases gradually with the increase of viscosity, and then reaches a constant value independent of the viscosity, of which the value is proportional to the thickness of the viscous liquid. The insertion loss takes a peak value dependent linearly on the thickness of the coated material. These propagation characteristics are useful to evaluate the paint film formation process.
