The gas chromatographic method was studied for the determination of trace amount of triphenyltin (TPT) leached from antifouling paint into seawater. The reaction of triphenyltin chloride with sodium borohydride gives triphenyltin hydride (TPTH) quantitatively, which is sensitive to an electron-capture detector (ECD). The gas chromatographic analysis was carried out a glass column packed with 10% Silicone OV-1 on Chromosorb W (AW-DMCS) at column temperature 220°C. The proposed method was well suited for the routine analysis of triphenyltin in seawater because the procedure was simple and the detection limit was about 0. 5 ng for triphenyltin hydride. The recoveries of triphenyltin chloride in seawater were in the range of 95-98%. From this work, it was found that this method may be applied to the determination of leaching rate (μg/cm2/day) of TPT from antifouling paint.
