Abstract

In order to optimize the formulation of ultraviolet rays curable resin (UVC resin) for rust prevenion coating of steel pipes, various kind of UVC resins which are composed of acrylic acid on copolymers and acrylates have been prepared and investigated their coating properties.
It has been found that adhesion property of UVC resin coating to steel has been improved by the addition of acrylic acid copolymers, because they have 9.0-10.5 of solubility parameter, similar to the oil on the steel pipe surface.
More adding acrylic acid copolymer, higher its adhesion strength of UVC resin coating but lower its rust prevention property. So, it has been concluded that the about 20 wt% addition of acrylic acid copolymer to UVC resin has been most suitable.
It has been found that the solubility of UVC resin coating in aqueous alkaline solution has been decided by its acid value and its rust prevention property influenced by both its acid value and the sort of carboxylic component. So, optimum range of acid value has been 40-60 and suitable components have been mono-carboxylic acid compounds, that is, mono-carboxylic copolymers and mono-carboxylic acrylates. If poly-carboxylic compounds are used for the components of UVC resin its water absorption increases and its rust prevention property becomes low.
