Abstract

Several basic metal oxides modified with carboxylic acids were prepared to develop the high performance organic-inorganic hybrid catalysts. As a result, carboxylic acids were supported easily on metal oxide surfaces.
Modified metal oxide powders as catalysts were used to the Michael reaction of di-l-menthyl fumarate 1 with thioacetic acid. The Michael reaction was accelerated by the addition of the modified metal oxides powder, and the reaction products were found to be diastereomer excess. Especially, modified magnesium oxides provided good results in catalytic activity and stereo selectivity.
