For the ordinary driver, operating an automobile on roads that are slippery with ice or snow could involve some danger. This is because the braking and driving forces and the lateral force on the tires are reduced when a vehicle is moving on road surfaces that have a low friction coefficient (hereafter referred to as low-μ), and this would make vehicle movement unstable. Driving on a slippery road can be made safer by increasing vehicle stability in turns, but it is also important to provide the driver with correct gain and phase feedback on vehicle steering response. This research formulated a basic logic for achieving both stability of vehicle movement and effectiveness of steering wheel operation. The validity of this logic was then demonstrated by testing with an actual vehicle.
