The stationary random signal is often used as a test signal in the estimation of the dynamics of control processes, or in the statistical syntheses of servomechanisms.
Many kinds of random signal generators have been reported, whose outputs are continuous, binary, or pulse voltage. On the other hand, very little work has been done on a mechanical random signal generator, which generates random displacement or angle; such mechanical random signals are necessary in actual experiments.
In order to generate such a mechanical random signal, the authors have designed a system in which a step-motor is drived irregularly to make random rotation of the motor axis. The driving circuit consists of multivibrators, a damper circuit, and a two-phase excitation circuit for the step-motor. The step-motor and its driving circuit can be regarded as a low-pass filter, and by changing its characteristics, several modes of autocorrelation function of random signal may be obtained.
This paper presents the design of the equipment, the statistical characteristics of the output signal, and an example, where the mechanical random signal is applied as an input to a statistically optimal servomechanism.
