Major generation process of indoor fine particles involves an entry of outdoor particulate matters to indoor environment, emissions by human behaviour indoor and resuspension of deposited particles from various interior surfaces. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated a significant association between atmospheric particulate matters and adverse human health effects such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases which may cause excess mortality. In general, ventilation is an important way to reduce indoor air pollution. However, atmospheric particulate matters can be entered by increased air exchange rate. Therefore, the nature of atmospheric particulate matters should be considered from the viewpoint of indoor air quality control. This article briefly describes emission sources, size-distribution, chemical composition and morphology of atmospheric particulate matters and entry to indoor environment.
