Abstract
OBJECTIVE: In order to mitigate fire and prevent occurrence of boilover in oil tank after great earthquakes, experimental study was conducted. BACKGROUND: Oil tanks were sometimes damaged and caused fires after great earthquakes, and the fire brigade is not afford to conduct fire-fighting such huge fires in oil and chemical complexes, so private fire brigade has to conduct until public fire brigade can do. To help such tactics of private fire brigade, we proposed floating bead and studied the effect of bead against oil tank fires. EXPERIMENTALS: Small scale burn experiments, up to 0.3m diameter pan, were conducted in NRIFD indoor test facilities. Vaporization rate decreased when bead was added to a pan where heptane existed. And the addition of bead into burning pan reduced burning rate and radiation, and also prevented occurrence of boilover in 0.3 m diameter pan using diesel. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS: In order to prevent fires and occurrence of boilover, the effect of floating bead was examined. And we found that the fire reduced and boilover was not occurred when bead was applied into a pan. Therefore the addition of bead worked clearly well and it is so useful. Boilover was not occurred when it was applied into burning of diesel oil. To conduct large scale test and to find cheaper and much effective material is expected.
