Abstract
A 75-year-old man noticed a darkly pigmented plaque on the lower conjunctiva of his right eye two months before the first visit to our hospital. The lesion, measuring 15 mm by 5 mm was involved inner two-thirds of the lower palpebral conjunctiva, extending partly to the upper one. An exenteration of the right orbit was carried out under the clinical diagnosis of malignant melanoma. Histopathologic examination showed that the atypical melanocytes were present only within the epidermis and the Meibomian glands. No melanoma cells invaded the dermis beyond the basement membrane, although many melanophages and lymphocytes were observed in the dermis. Based on the histpathological findings, we diagnosed this case as intra-epithelial malignant melanoma. There was no evidence of recurrence and metastasis at two and a half year after operation.
