Abstract
In recent years, due to spread of mobile hand-held devices and
internet being available over cellular network, compression of data
becomes more important. Downloading web-pages, maps or uploading
pictures using cell-phones, PDAs are now common. Thus, a light weight
picture compression technique is becoming all the more important. The
motivation of this work is to propose an algorithm which could
compress digital pictures more than the softwares popular now - even
though at the cost of little deterioration of picture quality, but
acceptable for small screens. We proposed a irreversible lossy coding
algorithm for still images based on wavelet transform. Through experiments
we have shown that the compression ratio is better compared to JPEG.
