The K-3 VLBI System was developed by the Radio Research Laboratory by the end of 1983. Japan-US system level experiments and international experiments (Crustal Dynamics Project of NASA) were successfully conducted in 1984. On the other hand, by the Geographical Survey Institute, a VLBI System with a 5-meter antenna is completed, which has been introduced some parts of the K-3 System, i.e. an acquisition terminal, high density data recorders and automatic operation software. In July 1984, the domestic VLBI system level experiments were conducted for approximately 27 hours in order to determine the baseline length between Kashima and Tsukuba. The difference of the baseline length between the results of the VLBI experiments and those of the trilateration and leveling is only 11 centimeters; this difference is considered almost comparable with the error of the trilateration and leveling (estimated 10 centimeters). Therefore, it is confirmed that the experiments were sncceeded and that the two VLBI systems, both at Kashima and Tsukuba, are available for the VLBI experiments for the precise geodetic purpose which will be conducted.
