Abstract

Viewers can understand the film by their cognitive ability, which has been the focus of psychological research so far. But, it is not sufficient to explain film comprehension solely by one's cognitive ability, because filmmakers edit the film properly so that viewers can understand it easily. This article argues the contribution of filmmakers who helps and supports viewers' understanding, examining recent studies such as edit blindness and continuity editing. In this view, literacy can be viewed not only personal ability but the social constituent.
