Abstract

While complementary resources within joint venture partners may increase the competitive response speed of joint ventures (JVs), bargaining processes between the partners may decrease the speed. Building on the awareness-motivation-capability framework, this paper examines 115 announcements and 100 implementations of production capacity expansion conducted by Japanese petrochemical companies from 1993 to 2004. The results suggest that the speed of generating responses in JVs is slower than that of non-JV firms, and that the speed of executions in JVs is faster than that of non-JV firms. The results also indicate that the larger the scale of response gets, the greater the differences of the speed of generating responses and executions between JVs and non-JV firms become.
