Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop a Social Support Scale for Sports and to clarify the differences in evaluations of social support according to differences in the frequency of participation in sports.
The survey was carried out by a questionnaire mailed to 5,000 people aged 18 and over, randomly selected from the Basic Resident Register in “city A” .
Using factor analysis, 2 factors were extracted : “instrumental support” and “emotional support.” The results showed that both factors’ social support scores showed higher values as the participation in sports became more frequent.
The results suggest that the Social Support Scale for Sports has validity for sports.
