Atomized steel powders, especially those with spherical particles, are liable to size-segregation on flowing. For this reason the separation phenomenon between coarse and fine particles was investigated.
In order to prevent the segregation, a study was made on the flow behaviour of several magnetized powders dropped through a solenoid coil, and the flow rate (in seconds perkilogram) was proved to be increased appreciably with the coil current applied. Several test powders having wide range particle. size could be blended uniformly by magnetization, without lumping up, to such a degree that their flow rates reached 1.05 times those not magnetized.
This new blending technique was applied to obtaining the perfect mixtures of industri al steel powders, enabling close packing. This was confirmed by the observation of the microstructures of the isostatically hot pressed specimens.
