Two methods of cut size estimation, statistical and theoretical, of a centrifugal air classifier were investigated. A simple empirical formula for the cut size was statistically derived from 161 sets of actual data. This formula was also applicable to the classifier having 10, 000 times the capacity.
On the other hand, the theoretical cut size derived from a particle trajectory is smaller at the range of over 10μm than actual data. It was considered that this phenomenon resulted from the behavior of particles based on their inertia, such as the initial velocity of particles in the radial direction in the classifier.
