Abstract

In this study, the mechanism of the coagula formation from polymer latex droplets by collecting coagulant droplets and the effect of the amount of collected coagulant droplets on the coagulation phenomena were studied. The following results were obtained.
1) Many traces of coagulant droplets remained as depressions on the surface of the coagulated particles.
2) A coagulated layer grew toward the center of the latex droplet as time passed with a circular interface between the coagulated layer and the uncoagulated latex.
3) The relationship between the amount of the coagulant collected by a single particle and coagulation conditions was estimated according to the following equation:
Q=kFdP2ZC, k=17.1
4) As the amount of coagulant ions collected by a latex droplet increased, the spherically coagulated particles were more fully recovered because of the higher conversion of the latex droplet.
