This paper shows a pedagogical discussion about the journalist as a profession. It has been discussed over a century about whether a journalist is a profession or not. The journalist seems to be recogneized as a profession in a society of journalism study in Japan. However, there are some dissenting opinions about this. A pedagogical discussion shows this seems to be a problem with the translation in the word “profession” in Japanese. It seems a profession in Japanese is close to an expert in English. Therefore, a profession as a doctor or a lawer is different from a profession as a journalist.
