Lesions in the oral cavity are mostly visible, but the actual diagnosis should be based on histopathological findings.
However, determination of the surgical margin of the lesions, search and examination of the presence of remaining cancer as well as frequent invasive biopsies are difficult.
On the other hand, it has been known from old times that autofluorescence exists in the tissues of a living body, but elucidation of its true character has been diflicult because of its weak fluorescence. In 1980, Kawakita et al.reported that there was autofluorescence pecuiiar to the tissues of cancer in a preparation from resected stomach cancer.
Therefore, we made a near-UV-excited autofluorescence photographic apparatus using the night viewe, .The apPa, atus is highly sensitive and aliows an immediate diagnosis. In the present study, wep erformed spectral analysis of autofluorescence of an oral malignant tumor and compared it with that of the oral cavity of normal human subjects to establish noninvasive fluorescence diagnosis of oral malignant tumors that utilized autofluorescence.
We performed spectral analysis in patients with an oral squamous cell carcinoma using a near-UVexcited autofluorescence photographic apparatus and found that there were bimodal peaks at 630 and 680 nm at the excitation wavelength of 410nm.Thus, we found a clear difference from the autofluorescence of the oral cavity of normal human subjects.
We considered that noninvasive immediate diagnosis of oral malignant tumor would be possibie by means of this method.
