We studied human papilloma virus (HPV) infection in oral papillomas by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers for the Ll region of human papilloma virus DNA, immunohistchemistry staining, and in situ hybridization. Human papillomas virus types in oral papillomas, determined by PCR-based sequence analysis, were HPV-4 (14/69, 20%), -59 (13/69, 19%), -16 (12/69, 17%), -1 (11/69, 16%), -11 (9/69, 13%), -2 (8/69, 12%), -6 (2/69, 2.9%), -31 (2/69, 2.9%), and -52 (1/69, 1.4%). Considering the results mentioned above, it was indicated that HPV infection was related to the development of oral papillomas.
