Abstract
For long-term safety operation of Tainter gate, it is necessary to surely confirm the dynamic stability of the gate. This paper presents the dynamic stability of practical Tainter gate "E" in Japan, based on the field vibration test using steel-rod breaking excitation method. First, the details of the field vibration test and the in-water natural vibration characteristics of the gate are explained. The dynamic stability of the gate is clarified using the test results and our theoretical analysis. Then, the dynamic stability of a gate under variable operational conditions is clarified. Furthermore, the dynamic stability under small discharge openings is confirmed, which was not carried out previously.
