In this paper, firstly the simulation analysis of the horizontal loading test of the 1/6 scale model of the abutment is conducted. Especially, the stiffness of the joint spring between the abutment and the back fill soil is focused on. From the simulation, it is found that the the back fill soil is effective after the main wall of the abutment falls down. Secondly, the numerical analysis of the actual abutment is conducted. In this research case, the weakest point of the abutment is the base of the parapet. So, the main wall of the abutment doesn't fall down. Therefore, it is found that the back fill soil doesn't affect the characteristics of the horizontal resistance.
