Expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) has excellent shock absorption performance, and some applications of foam material to blast resistant structures have been suggested. However, dynamic mechanical properties of an EPS under high strain rate had been unclear. In this study, a blast loading device was developed to conduct blast uniaxial complession tests. In the test, behavior of an EPS cube with 70mm subjected to explosion of 5-8g of TNT explosive was measured by a high-speed camera. Uniform loading condition was kept during blast loading in this loading device, and the resolution of the stress-strain curve obtained in this test seemed to be satisfactory for practical purpose. The mean strain rate obtained in this test was approximately 1.7×101/s to 2.6×101/s.
