Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the aerodynamic performance of the edge girder of a cable-stayed bridge as part of the structural system. Through wind tunnel tests on the full elastic bridge model, the vertical and torsional aerodynamic response of the girder was measured. The wind was set to attack the model perpendicularly, at the positive angle of attack of 2.1°, at the yawing angle of 10° and 20°. For these different conditions, the bridge showed the vertical vortex-induced vibration of different modes, while it showed the torsional vortexinduced vibration of the 1st symmetric mode. The amplitude of these vortex-induced vibrations was smaller than the allowable value. Meanwhile, no galloping and no torsional flutter occurred until their checking wind velocity. Additionally, in the boundary layer turbulent flow, the bridge showed the gust response, the amplitude of which was small.
