Many reports have suggested that failure of corner welds in steel bridge piers during large earthquakes is due to fracture of the corner welds containing unwelded sections. In this report, we clarified the specifications of the corner welds of existing steel bridge piers and conducted low-cycle fatigue tests to clarify their fracture behavior. As a result, we found a relationship between the strain at the fillet weld root and the throat area ratio. We also proposed a design fatigue strength curve for corner welds.
