Transverse loads caused by flooding may induce lateral displacement of bridge superstructures and damage bearing side blocks, leading to bridge washout. Such displacement generates shear forces and bending moments in long-connection type bolts through transverse loading on the side blocks. However, these bolts are not designed to resist transverse loads, and their load-bearing capacities and failure mechanisms have not been sufficiently clarified. In this study, loading tests were conducted on long-connection type bolts subjected to shear and combined shear and bending. The results show that larger edge distances increase the maximum load and result in thread shear–dominant behavior, whereas smaller edge distances enhance the influence of bending-induced tensile stresses.
