Abstract

Chanos cans (Forskål) is one of the most available fish for cultivation in Formosa and Philippine districts. Very little is known about the breeding habits of this fish in Formosa. The distribution of the fry, about 12 to 26mm. in total length, found along sandy coasts, has been reported by previous authors as far northward as to Sou-Wan on the east coast and to Tansui on the west coast in Formosa.
The specimen here described is a post-larva of 14.0mm. in total length, obtained from the Amami-Oshima which is north to the Riu-Kiu Islands. This specimen corresponds to the description of the fry of Chanos chanos from the Java Sea by H. Delsman (1929). I introduce here that the northern limit of the distribution of this fry is farther northward to the Amami-Ohima than ever has been known.
