We analyzed 21 patients, each with a giant meningioma (more than 6cm maximum diameter) calculated from contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) images or magnetic resonance images (MRIs) . The volumes of the tumors were measured by an image analyzer to study the correlation of the volume with sex, age, site of development, pathology, outcome and maximum diameter of the image. The results of the present study can be summarized as follows: 1) Tumor volume ranged from 16.6 cm3 to 78.7cm3 (mean, 34.0cm3) . 2) Mean tumor volume was greater in men than in women. 3) The maximum diameters on the images did not proportionally represent tumor volumes (r=0.54) . 4) There was no correlation between tumor volume and patient age (r=0.29) ; between volume and site of development, nor between volume and pathology. 5) Patients with malignant pathology had poor prognoses regardless of tumor volume. Measurement of tumor volume with the help of an image analyzer provides important information for the treatment of clinical patients.
