Abstract

A flow injection method for the determination for magnesium with eriochrome azurol B (EAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTMA) was studied, and the following results were obtained.
1) The linearity of calibration curve was good, and the relative standard deviation in respectivefive determinations of 1.0 and 0.5 mg/l of magnesium were 0.79 and 0.85%, respectively.
2) A routine sampling rate of 60 determinations per hour can be achieved with the proposedmethod.
3) Samples containing calcium need to be used after suitable dilution because more than 4 mg/lof calcium causes positive error.
4) The values of magnesium in natural water obtained by this method agreed well with those obtained by atomic absorption spectrometry.
