It was tried to improve compressive strength of carbon fiber reinforced carbon (CFRC) as a core material of FRS (fine Rahmen surface) carbon for dental implant. The unidirectiona (UD) carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) were prepared by using high performance carbon fiber (CF) and phenol resin containing some amount of graphite powder, and then carbonized into CFRC at about 1000°C under nitrogen atmosphere.
The influences of the following factors on the mechanical properties of CFRC's were investigated; (1) types of CF (high strength CF and high modulus CF), (2) existence of coated sizing agent on the surface of CF, (3) pre-heat treatment of CF at 2500°C, and (4) re-heat treatment of CFRC at 2500°C.Removing the sizing agent from CF resulted into increase of flexural strength. The CFRC using CF pre-heated at 2500°C and CFRC re-heated at 2500°C exhibited larger flexural strength and smaller compressive strength and interlaminar shear strength than the others. Fiber pull-out could be observed at the fractured surface of the CFRC having the large flexural strength. From X-ray diffraction analysis and microscopic observation, relationships between the mechanical properties and the treatments are explained on the basis of the variation of the adhesive strength between CF and matrix carbon.
