It is attempted to produce high strength carbon matrix composite from fine pulverized coke, mesophase coal tar pitch and SiC whisker.
The fabrication method of SiC whisker/carbon composite in this study is as follows: the pulverized coke and SiC whisker are mixed with the mesophase coal tar pitch, which are directly turned to SiC whisker/carbon composite by hot press (650°C, 20MPa) and heat-treatment at various temperature so as to get a high density and high strength. The maximum bending strength of the composite reinforced with 40Wt% of SiC whisker was 120MPa, and the strength value was remarkably high in comparison with 80MPa of the product without reinforcing under similar preparation conditions. In particular, it is noteworthy that the graphitization of the carbon matrix in the SiC whisker/carbon com-posite is more significantly accelerated than that in the absence of SiC whisker by heat-treatment at 2000°C or above.
