Mesophase petroleum pitch fiber oxidation reaction was analyzed by applying the material balance equations to the time courses data relating to total amounts of oxygen consumed and elemental composition of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen in the fiber.
Increase in fiber mass and amounts of water and carbonic gases formed during the reaction were estimated. The fixed oxygen amount in the fiber was in fair agreement with the value obtained previously from van Krevelen plot of elemental compositions.
