Abstract
This paper gives an overview of the activities of the German Carbon Group called Arbeitskreis Kohlenstoff and of related institutions and industries. A short review of the history of German carbon research and development is carried out, starting with the industrialisation and the foundation of still working companies. The structure of the German Carbon Group with its technical committees is explained. Furthermore, the relation and activities of the European Carbon Group is given. A selection of the multitude activities of the German Carbon Group has been made. Therefore, the big carbon companies are considered like SGL Carbon, Schunk Kohlenstofftechnik, Evonik-Degussa, Rutgers-CarboTech, and Graphit Kropfmuhl. Additionally, the small enterprise Chemical Vapour Technology and the University of Erlangen are mentioned.
