As the third alloying constituents, 0·5, I and 2% of Ni, Co, Cu, Ag, Ca, Cd, Mg, Al, Tl, Si, Sn, Pb, As, Sb, Bi, Cr, Te and Mn were added alone to the binary alloys of Mg-Zn, which contain 2, 3 or 5% of the latter element.
The corrosibility of these ternary alloys against N/10 NaCl solution and the artificial sea-water was tested in the cast and the quenched state. The Rockwell-hardness value of these alloys, after several heat-treatments, was also measured.
The addition of Ni, Co, Cu Al Tl, Pb and Bi make the said binary alloys more corrosible. On the contrally, the addition of As, Ca, Cd, Hg and Mn make the alloy more resistant to corrosion especially As and Mn gave the best result.
By quenching, the corrosibili'y of these ternary alloys is not improved, except the alloys containing Si, Sn, Tl and Pb.
The third constituents which harden the binary alloys are found to be Cu, Ni, Ag, Al, Si and Bi, while the hardening effect of Cd, Si, Hg, As, Sb and Pb which have a low melting point, is very small.
Hardening, due to aging (at 150°C) is observed throughout the specimens prepared, except the alloys containing Ni and Sb
