Evolution and development of the coal liquefaction, synthesis of ammonia or methanol and-other high-temperature and high-pressure chemical industries, chiefly depend on the choice of structural materials for the equipment. There have been a number of cases where insufficient study of the material caused some failures in the process. Alloy steeis suitable for the high-temperature and high-pressure chemical industries are being studied in the laboratories of the Sumitomo Metal Industries, Ltd. as a field of the studies on alloy steels. In the present paper, requirements mainly for alloy steels resisting to high-temperature and high-pressure were dealt with by citing some commercial examples.
