A procedure of applying the combustion method to pig iron and alloy steels such as Ni·Cr and Ni·Cr·Mo steels was investigated in detail. The outline of the experiment is as follows:-
(1) The specimen of 1·6g was burned at 1300°C for 30 minutes at the rate of oxygen flow of 200 cc/min.
(2) The 1% neutral hydrogen peroxide was used as an absorbing solution.
(3) A CO2-free purified air was passed at the rate of 500cc/min. for 15 minutes before titration to expel the residual CO2 gas in the absorbent.
(4) Bromkresolblau (Riken, pH: 6·8-8·0) was used as an indicator, and N/100 NaOH applied in titration.
(5) The result of the analysis was accurate within ±0·001%.
