The author presented statistically results of the operation of the No. 5 basic open hearth using mixed gas in Showa Steel Works during the period from April 1937 to Sept. 1939. Then the author examined physical and chemical reactions that take place when mixed gas is preheated in the regenerator and gave useful directions concerning the practice and construction of the open hearth.
