Abstract
Although cast iron causes either oxidizing wear or the wear accompanying mechanical destruction according to the relation of the pressure and the friction velocity, the amount of the latter is remarkably greater than that of the former. As to the effect of phosphorus on the wear of cast iron, as far as the experiment to-day is concerned, is as follows:
(1) In the case of oxidizing wear, the effect is slight. However, somewhat better result is obtained when the velocity is low, while the worse result attained when the velocity is higher and the pressure lower.
(2) In the case of the wear accompanying mechanical destruction, it gives better effect.
(3) It widens the range of the pressure and the velocity causing oxidizing wear, Therefore, it may give pronouncedly better effect sometimes according to the amount of the pressure and the velocity.
